Child Psychotherapy for children aged 5-10 years old

I work closely with families, supporting parents to better understand their child’s emotional world and develop relational ways of responding that strengthen connection, safety, and emotional regulation at home and beyond.

I support children and their families who may be experiencing:

Big or hard-to-manage emotions

including frequent anger outbursts, tantrums, emotional meltdowns, anger that seems to come “out of nowhere” or reactions that feel out of proportion.

Low self-esteem

where a child may struggle with confidence or feel they are not good enough.

Attachment difficulties

such as challenges with separation, trust, emotional closeness, or feeling safe and supported in relationships.

The effects of trauma

including overwhelming or frightening experiences in early life or more recent events.

Loss and grief

including bereavement, family separation, loss of friendships, immigration, adoption, or other significant life changes.

Anxiety-related concerns

such as excessive worries, social anxieties, school-related distress, or difficulties settling and feeling secure.

How it works

Child psychotherapy begins with an initial meeting between the parent(s) and the therapist, followed by three child-centred, play-based assessment sessions with the child. A feedback session with parents then takes place to share key themes from the assessment and to decide together what feels most helpful going forward.

1. Meeting

This initial meeting offers space for the parent(s) and therapist to discuss current concerns, what has been happening for the child at home and school, and relevant family and developmental history. Information shared is treated as confidential. Further details are outlined in the Policies section.

2. Child Assessment

The assessment is a gentle, play-based process that helps the therapist understand your child’s emotional world, relationships, and ways of coping. It usually takes place over several sessions, allowing time for your child to feel comfortable and for a thoughtful understanding to develop.

3. Parent feedback session

This session is held with the parent(s) and therapist, without the child present. It offers space to reflect on key themes from the assessment, discuss recommendations, and consider what support may be most helpful moving forward.

4. Therapy sessions

Therapy sessions are child-centred and play-based, offering a safe space for children to express thoughts and feelings. Within a trusting therapeutic relationship, the therapist attends to themes that emerge in play, supporting children to make sense of emotions, relationships, and experiences over time.
